Method
Step 1
- Roll the lemons on the counter to release more juice. Cut them in half and squeeze using a citrus juicer until you get about 1 cup of fresh lemon juice.

Step 2
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Heat on medium and stir until the sugar dissolves completely to make a simple syrup.

Step 3
- Remove the syrup from heat and let it cool slightly. This prevents the lemonade from tasting overly warm or bitter.

Step 4
- Pour the lemon juice into a large pitcher. Add the sugar syrup and stir well to combine.

Step 5
- Add 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher and mix everything together until fully combined.

Step 6
- Taste the lemonade and adjust if needed. Add a little more lemon juice for extra tartness or a bit more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.

Step 7
- Add ice cubes to glasses and pour the lemonade over the ice. Garnish with lemon slices if desired and serve chilled.

Notes
Use fresh lemons for the best flavor. Bottled lemon juice works in a pinch but the taste will not be as bright.
For a fizzy version, replace part of the water with sparkling water just before serving.
Store leftover lemonade in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and stir before serving.
